- AirTraf 0.5.0 sniff_server Information 4/15/2002 Here are some requirements for running the sniff_server properly. 1) need compatible wireless cards (prism2 or aironet) 2) need compatible drivers (linux-wlan-ng or airo-linux) 3) need those drivers patched with airids patches to enable detection of signal strength 4) I'll have the aironet drivers available for download at my sourceforge project page. (http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/airtraf) 5) I'll also have prism2 drivers available, but it is not ready yet, so in the meantime, visit (http://www.elixar.net/wireless) to learn howto work with prism2 drivers, as well as aironet drivers. @) Building sniff_server ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. sniff_server should be built automagically when you do 'make all' in the src directory Okay, for best results, you should try to use aironet, since it lets you sniff on all channels at once, which is key in trying to see interference, and such. Prism2 should work as well, but it is not as thoroughly tested as of now, so hold off a bit if there are problems, and I will quickly make things work better. I've also included a quick script for putting aironet card into promisc. mode, assuming that you have the proper drivers for it. Also, script for putting prismII card into promisc. mode is available. You can find both under the scripts directory... Once everything's setup, you can run it using various command-line options. For a quick review, type './airtraf -h' for list of usage. The basic interface is ncurses, which I wrote to be able to show some of the data that can be collected using AirTraf. But the power-feature will be coming later as the poll_server gets mature. For more info on difference between sniff_server & poll_server, goto the 'docs' directory. I'll have more pertinent documentation there as I get more time to write things up. Once you get into the ncurses interactive window, you may notice that some of the menu functions don't work. Yes, you're absolutely correct. They *do NOT* work. I just haven't written code for them yet :) But they are there for some idea as to what will be coming up next. Currently "most" of the menu's are functioning properly... as to figuring out what does what, I leave that to you to try & see :) Well, so that's it for now... If there are any questions, feel free to contact me directly (saint@elixar.net) or post on the sourceforge project page. I'll get them either way. Its great to have the seventh release, and I'm excited to inform you that there's been consistent interest in the project, and its getting on its way. BTW, again, please inform me of any bugs that pop up. Anyhow, enjoy! Peter K.
